Our finest moments are most likely to occur when we are feeling deeply troubled, sad, or unfulfilled. For it is only in such moments, propelled by our pain, that we are likely to step out of our ruts and start searching for different ways, truths and answers.
For Sheila and I, the trouble began with the words, "you have a brain tumor" and sadly deepened when we discovered that we could never return to the same ruts we clung to so dearly. This is the case of many survivors. Surviving often means a completely new way of thinking and living. Health and wealth can be so intoxicating. It lures you into a false sense of security. When it is suddenly and permanently taken away, you realize how your life swings on the fates you encounter.
We climbed out of the comfortable ruts and embarked on our final journey determined to make a meaningful statement. For us, the tumor will remain as a constant reminder of how fragile our lives hang by a thin life thread. It lives on, out of our control, as a stranger lurking in the darkness. Fate has dealt us an unbelievably bad set of circumstances, but, we are not defeated. We face the foe, as so many others, in the high stakes battle of life.
Each year we put on our armor and publicly fight the battle against brain tumors. Backed by a growing army of supporters, Team Underwood, embarks on the journey outside the ruts most call home. This year’s battle is a high stakes gamble that runs 1750 miles through seven states for twenty two days. Our goal is to raise $50,000 for Brain Tumor research, outreach programs, and public awareness.
The cost is high and there is great risk involved. Usually, Sheila and I underwrite the cost of the Tri4Cure event. That allows us to use all the money donated as it was intended. However, the cost of this year’s event will be somewhere between $6,500 and $9,000. Frankly, we need your help.
This year we are asking corporate sponsors to step forward and participate as partners. But we are and remain a grassroots organization. You, as a supporter, can participate by pledging and donating to the team. Each day on the road cost approximately $350 for the support vehicle, equipment, food and lodging. You can best help us now by pledging or donating one day or a half day in the name of an honoree. The honoree would have that time dedicated to them and their name posted prominently on the support vehicle and my clothing.
You could pledge and donate any amount of dollars specifically to the event. Again, we will have a beautifully crafted tee shirt for sale for $25 and we will reserve your size and color. Any donation over $25 will receive a shirt.
